The Scorpion King

April 19, 2002

Starring: The Rock, Kelly Hu, Grant Heslov, Peter Facinelli

Directed by: Charles Russell

Dwayne Johnson, also know as "The Rock," stars as a warrior in ancient Egypt in "The Scorpion King." A prequel to "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns," this movie shows the events that lead to the warrior becoming the first Egyptian Pharaoh. Also starring Michael Clark Duncan ("The Green Mile"). Rated 'PG-13' for violence and a lot of exposed skin. Time stuck between "The Rock" and a hard seat: 88 minutes.

"The Scorpion King" is an action film that will make you laugh and especially make the guys drool. There were plenty of women showing lots of skin and fight scenes that will keep you entertained throughout the movie.

"The Rock," oh boy is he HOT! I think I found a new crush. I never cared for the man and had no reason to respect him. However, after watching an interview that he had on "E!" I couldn't wait to see him on the big screen. I thought he was a typical wrestler that had no personality and no brains, just big muscles. But man I was proven wrong in every aspect. I think he will keep entertaining us in the future, and not just in the ring. We will be seeing "The Rock" in many more movies.

Is this movie worth the price of admission? Yes, although there was something missing and the acting wasn't the greatest. I wanted to support "The Rock" because I know he will get bigger in the near future, and not just in size. Would I see it again? Yes, I'm sure I missed something and to help "The Rock" with his stardom.

Remember the days of the XFL? It was wrestling's version of football and was much hyped and people flocked to watch it for about week or so, including myself. It only took about two games, however, to realize that it was pretty lousy and not worth watching. Well, "The Scorpion King" has a lot in common with the XFL. "The Rock" is everywhere hyping the film, the movie brought in boatloads of money in its opening weekend, and it only took about two minutes for me to realize that it wasn't worth watching either.

I've always wondered why people would spend money to watch wrestling on Pay-Per-View but that's pretty much what I did with this movie. All the fight scenes felt and looked like "WWF Smackdown." They must have used the same choreographer. I kept wondering how they were going to incorporate a folding chair into the ancient time setting so someone could smash it over someone else's back. The flick was also full of beautiful, scantly clad women, which was good, but ridiculous. Were there no unattractive women in ancient Egypt? I guess not. Really, all that was missing was a referee that gets distracted during the fighting and then counts one guy out and declares a winner.

Is "The Scorpion King" worth the price of admission? No, no, no. Someone should have put the sleeper hold on this flick before it was ever made. Would I see it again? Not in a million years.
