The Sum of All Fears

May 31, 2002

Starring: Ben Affleck, Morgan Freeman, James Cromwell, Liev Schreiber, Marie Matiko

Directed by: Phil Alden Robinson

"The Sum of All Fears" is a movie that seems fitting for the times. Terrorists have hired nuclear scientists to make a nuclear bomb that is to be smuggled into the U.S. and detonated at a major sporting event. The terrorists plan to make it look like Russia is responsible hoping the U.S. will launch a counter strike and the two countries will destroy each other. Starring Ben Affleck ("Changing Lanes"), Morgan Freeman ("High Crimes"), and James Cromwell ("Space Cowboys"). Rated PG-13 for violence and disaster images. Time hoping this scenario or anything like it never happens anywhere in the world: 124 minutes.

Do we know the full truth every time a crisis arises? The answer is "no" for those who had to think about it. Some believe everything they read or hear, while others don't. In the past, I was one who was a sucker for anything, but since 9-11 it's hard to trust or even believe everything and anyone. "The Sum of All Fears" is scandalous, mind twisting, and revolves around terrorism. At one point in time I would have been considered this movie to be a far-fetched Hollywood creation but now nothing seems so far-fetched.

Ben Affleck did a wonderful job. He was vulnerable, determined, and wasn't afraid to speak his mind. The love story was short but sweet and didn't drag. Morgan Freeman as usual did a wonderful job too. Although he didn't have a huge role, it was still an important role.

Was this movie worth the price of admission? Yes. There is plenty of action and suspense. Would I see it again? Yes, probably on DVD.

I also went to see "Enough" starring Jennifer Lopez, also known as J-Lo. Since Dan had no desire to see it, I finally got the chance to go. I won't go into detail but this was worth watching. It was a lot like "Sleeping With the Enemy," but this showed you more defensive moves than just being vulnerable.

A year ago this flick might have come off as improbable to a lot of people. How could anyone bring a nuclear bomb into this country and level a city? Boy how things have changed. Now people are asking if this scenario is too real. I had chills running up and down my spine when the bomb exploded in this flick. It all seemed a little too real for me.

This whole movie has a very realistic feel to it. Every scenario seemed like it could happen in real life. In fact, a lot of the storyline seemed to be taken from current news reports even though I think this flick was made before the current level of concern. Tom Clancy must have some kind of a terror crystal ball. I wonder how he is with Tarot cards.

While a nuclear bomb itself is the center of the storyline, the aftermath of its explosion is not dwelled on at all. This flick could have easily turned into a gruesome rescue mission but it instead focused on catching those responsible and preventing a war. I liked that.

Is this flick worth the price of admission? Yes. The sum of all parts adds up to a great "Sum of All Fears." Would I see it again? No. I'm afraid I'll be seeing something like it on the news all too soon.
