Serendipity

October 5, 2001

Starring: Kate Beckinsale, John Cusack, Jeremy Piven, Molly Shannon, Bridget Moynahan, John Corbett

Directed: Peter Chelsom

Christmas in New York is a time for shopping, ice-skating, and falling in love. Fate draws a couple together in a department store as they vie for the same pair of gloves and they end up having a romantic evening together. The trouble is that they are both seeing someone else. Events lead them to go their separate ways with hopes that fate will bring them together again to see if what they had was true love. Starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. Rated 'PG-13' for a little bit of minor cussing and sexuality. Time between bathroom breaks: 85 minutes.

This movie is a romantic, uplifting movie that will keep a smile on your face for quite some time.
"Serendipity," a word that I can't seem to pronounce, is set in New York City and shows the skyline scenes and the Twin Towers. We were invited to a sneak preview right after the terrorist attacks and before the movie started, a guy came out and told us that before the October 5 release, they were going to delete some scenes that showed the Twin Towers. However, after watching the movie, I started thinking that there was maybe a taxi scene that should be cut out, but not any views of the city. Does this mean that anything that ever shows the New York skyline will be altered in the future so people can't remember what it was like a few weeks ago? I know Hollywood is in a tough spot right now, but I think that it would be okay to leave things the same.
Is this movie worth the price of admission? Yes, especially if you are in the mood to see a love story. Would I see it again? Yes.

For fear of sounding like a complete softy I hate to say it, but I really enjoyed this movie. "Serendipity" is a very funny romantic-comedy that is perfect for the hopeless-romantic in all of us, including myself.
One of the only things wrong with this movie was how everything always turned out so perfect. The lovebirds just happen to bump into each other at the perfect time in a crowded store, they find the perfect places to go, and John Cusack is full of perfect romantic lines that normal guys can't think of until the moment has passed or the date is over. Man, I wish dating was that easy.
The ending is heart-warming and will make you feel good, even though you already know how it'll turn out. It is done cleverly enough that you never know exactly how everything will happen.
Also, I agree with Nancy in that I don't think they should cut out every scene that has the Trade Center in it. The Twin Towers always have, and always will be a part of New York.
Was this flick worth the price of admission? Well, we had free passes but it would have been worth paying for. Would I see it again? I won't rent it by myself, but if a future girlfriend wants to see it, I'd definitely watch it again.
