Oscar Preview
March 24, 2001
Starring: Whoopi Goldberg
Another year goes by and another Oscar will be awarded March 24th. Who will take the Oscar home this year and who will cry all the way home? Hollywood will decide later this month but we thought we'd put our two cents first. The nominations have been out for a while so we'll just skip to who's going to win the biggest awards. Here's what we think will happen and also how we would have voted if asked by the Academy.

2001 had many movies that deserve to win an award, however, of all the movies only five can be nominated in each category. Even if you think others should have been nominated instead, just like most award shows, the general public has no input.
"Moulin Rouge" took eight nominations. Even though this wasn't one of my favorite movies, I believe it will take at least two Oscar's home. Dan, you can stop smirking. I was very surprised that "Pearl Harbor" was not nominated for best picture. I also thought that "The Others" would have been nominated for something. With the recent up rise of video games that are made into movies, I'm amazed they haven't made a new category just for them. Another shock was how "Ocean's Eleven" wasn't nominated for anything, especially with all the big named actors and actresses used and all the hype it received.
Will I see the Oscars? Yes, but before I do I want to go see "Gosford Park," "Iris," and "Mulholland Drive" since they are nominated for numerous awards, and I haven't even heard of at least one of them.

Since I haven't seen every movie that is nominated, let me just rant and rave about a few that I did see.
"Moulin Rouge" was my favorite movie of the year. Just the sure creativity that went into it blows my mind. I've seen it 5 times and still love it. I hope it will surprise everyone and win best picture but I know it won't. I have a better chance of striking oil in my backyard while shootin' at some food than "Moulin Rouge" has at winning any big award. It did get eight nominations though so I'm happy. It should have had two more: one more for director and another for best supporting actor for Jim Broadbent, the dude who played the cabaret owner, but he got nominated for his part in "Iris" instead.
Everyone knows "A Beautiful Mind" will probably get best picture, but of all nominated flicks I saw four and I would put three of them ahead of it. "Moulin Rouge," "In The Bedroom," and "Lord of the Rings" all left a bigger impression on me.
As far as surprises, I thought "Black Hawk Down" and "Harry Potter" would get more nominations.
If they had a category for best horror flick of the year, the award would have to go to "Session 9." It is a great and creepy flick that almost no one has heard of because it only came out in NY and LA. I highly recommend it.
