Mr. Deeds

June 28, 2002

Starring: Adam Sandler, Peter Gallagher, Winona Ryder
Directed by: Phil Alden Robinson

Adam Sandler stars as Longfellow Deeds, a small-town guy who inherits $40 billion from a rich uncle. While in New York trying to claim the money, a tabloid newspaper tries to exploit him for a story while other people try to get his share of his uncle’s company. Also starring Winona Ryder (“Autumn in New York”) and John Turturro (“Collateral Damage”). Rated ‘PG-13’ for light cussing and some sexual references. Time out of the heat and in the freezer that we sometimes call a movie theater: 96 minutes.

A phrase that can help describe “Mr. Deed’s” is “Funny Dumb.” It is a movie that is so dumb it’s funny. Unfortunately, it is also a movie that will make you wish you went to see something else. Adam Sandler is loosing his touch. Maybe he needs to come up with some new comedy.

Maybe the reason I didn’t like it was the fact that I had to tell a young woman to take her feet off my arm. She actually touched her feet to my arm! It was bad enough watching the butler hit Adam Sandler’s black, frostbitten foot, but having someone touch her sweaty feet on my arm was just plain disgusting.

Was this movie worth the price of admission? Only if you are a big Adam Sandler fan. However, renting might be the best option. Would I see this movie again? No once was enough for me.

We also went to see Minority Report. With all the previews on television, I expected a lot of action or violence, but this was more of a drama. However, it was a futuristic film that kept my attention from beginning to end. I think Tom Cruise helped make this a huge success, but the storyline still had something lacking.

Was this worth the price of admission? Yes, of course Tommy is in it. Would I see it again? Maybe.

Adam Sandler movies are always a little different than most movies, so it is only fair to compare “Mr. Deeds” to other Sandler flicks. Personally, I thought his first two flicks, “Billy Madison” and “Happy Gilmore,” were two of the funniest movies I have ever seen and “Big Daddy” was pretty funny. This flick though was pretty bad.

“Mr. Deeds” just wasn’t funny enough. Other Sandler flicks were consistently funny all the way through, but this one had major lulls in the comedy department. Then when something funny did come along, it still wasn’t as funny as it could have been because I had already seen that part a million times on TV and previews. A lot of people did laugh though. They must not live in front of the TV or movie screen like I do, which is not to hard to believe.

Old Sandler flicks also gave us funny catch phrases that my friends and I still recite today like “Stop looking at me swan.” This may not make sense to most folks, but to Sandler fans it is gold. In “Mr. Deeds,” however, I honestly can’t remember any single line.

Is “Mr. Deeds” worth the price of admission? Only for die-hard Sandler fans. Would I see it again? No thank you.

Also, “Minority Report” was very good. I thought it was one of the most complete flicks to come along in a while. The digital newspapers and billboards were the best.
