June 1, 2001

Starring: Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, Jim Broadbent, John Leguizamo, Carolin O'Connor

Directed: Baz Luhrmann

"Moulin Rouge," a movie about a place where dreams and fantasies come true. Paris, 1900 is the setting for this movie where Nicole Kidman plays a dancer at the famed cabaret, the Moulin Rouge. She is forbidden to fall in love but does. Ewan McGregor plays a writer seeking to know what love is. This musical story is told through a series of modern songs. Rated 'PG-13' for mature content. For more conservative people, consider it rated 'R.'

Moulin Rouge is a musical that delivers comedy and romance with its own sense of originality. While most movies start strong and end weak, this movie was just the opposite. I was so lost and frustrated in the beginning, that I was about to get up and go watch Shrek instead. Since I didn't want to leave alone, I stuck it through. Finally the movie started coming together and I couldn't stop laughing. The actors were singing songs from the 1970's, 80's, and 90's. At times Nicole Kidman was annoying and it made me realize why Tom Cruise got sick of her. Ewan McGregor did an excellent job. He can carry a tune and he looked more natural on the big screen than Kidman. The love story in some ways reminded me of Romeo and Juliet where the musical was in a class all of its own. Is this movie worth the price of admission? Yes, with a coupon or if someone else is paying. Would I see it again? No, unless it was made into a play or a music video.

"Moulin Rouge" is unlike any movie that I've seen in a long time. This entertaining and extremely creative movie is more like a Broadway musical than anything. "Crazy" is the only way to describe the beginning as you try to figure out what is going on. It then settles down somewhat and the music takes over. The songs are funny, moving, and cleverly pieced together to tell the story. Everyone will recognize the tunes and will have to keep from tapping their foot along to the beat. The modern songs fit in with the story and don't detract from the early 1900's setting. Great costumes and scenery only add to the overall quality of this movie. Is "Moulin Rouge" worth the price of admission? Yes it is, no coupons needed. However, "Moulin Rouge" really is a different type of movie. If you normally only like mainstream, cookie-cutter types of movies, you probably won't like this one. Would I see this movie again? Sure.
