Men in Black II

July 3, 2002

Starring: Tommy Lee Jones,Will Smith, Linda Fiorentino, Rip Torn

Directed by: Barry Sonnenfeld

Agents Jay and Kay are back and fighting aliens to save the Earth in "Men in Black II." This time, after Agent Kay is brought back into the fold, the two must stop an evil alien disguised as a beautiful woman from obtaining a powerful jewel. They must also get the jewel off Earth before it explodes and destroys everything. Starring Will Smith ("Ali") and Tommy Lee Jones ("Rules of Engagement"). Rated 'PG-13' for sci-fi violence and some provocative humor. Time: at 88 minutes it was almost as short as Broomfield's fireworks display.

Another success for Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. "Men in Black II" will keep you laughing and keep you awake through the whole movie.

For some reason I didn't really care for the first movie, or maybe I just don't remember it. But from what I do remember it wasn't as funny as this one.

Will Smith, where should I even begin. I have loved the guy for most of my life and the older he gets the better he becomes all around, especially in acting. Tommy Lee Jones always plays such serious roles, but when he plays in a comedy he does a good job. In my book he is a great actor.

Is this movie worth the price of admission? Yes, especially if you watched the first. Although even if you haven't seen the first, you can still follow along. Would I watch it again? Yes, but maybe not for a long time.

I love the Fourth of July. I love seeing American flags everywhere, listening to patriotic music, and eating big slices of watermelon. My favorite things on the Fourth, though, are booming fireworks and blockbuster movies. But this year, the fireworks were pathetic and the movie was pretty lousy.

It's unfortunate that on one of the most patriotic Fourths in a long time, that we had to sit around for an extra long time to watch the shortest and lamest fireworks shows I've ever seen. I know it was because of the wind and fire danger, but we needed that show. Maybe we can use the leftovers for a show on Broomfield Days.

Anyway, we did see a movie this week and it almost as bad as the fireworks. "Men in Black II" lacked in general excitement and humor. The story was overly simplistic and I think I only laughed maybe three or four times. Anybody who knows me knows it doesn't take much to make me laugh either. The flick never dragged, which was good, but only because it didn't have time to because it was so short. Cartoon flicks are longer than this one. I'm glad they didn't try to stretch it though or it could have been even worse.

Is "Men in Black II" worth the price of admission? Uh, no. I wish I had spent the money on watermelon instead. Would I see it again? I would rather sit on Midway Boulevard and wait for the fireworks that aren't coming.
