Lord of The Rings

February 4, 2002

Starring: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler

Directed: Pete Jackson

A hobbit becomes the caretaker of a powerful magic ring and must keep it from falling into the wrong hands. Along the way, a group of mythical creatures join the hobbits to form the fellowship of the ring, including an elf, a dwarf, a human, and a wizard and others. Together they must destroy the ring. Starring Elijah Wood ("Deep Impact"), Ian McKellen ("Gods and Monsters"), and Liv Tyler ("Armageddon"). Based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkiens. Rated 'PG-13' for battle scenes and a few scary moments. This movie isn't a kid's movie like "Harry Potter," but it's still suitable for most. Most importantly, time between bathroom breaks: 178 minutes.

Imagine being read a fantasy book when you were a child. Your imagination is running wild and when you finally fall asleep, the book is the only thing you are dreaming about. Well this is what this movie reminded me of.
I was very skeptical to go see "Lord of the Rings," and then on top of that I heard it was three hours long. I never read or heard of the books before the previews came out, and thought why would I go see this? But I ended up enjoying it more than watching Harry Potter. Even though the movie was very long it kept my interest from beginning to end.
At the theater, many people were dressed in costumes from the book. If all these people are so hyped about it, where have I been and why haven't I heard about it before.
Is "Lord of the Rings" worth the price of admission? Yes, the effects and different scenes will blow your mind away. Not to try to shock anyone but I even got scared in a couple of scenes. Dan, sorry for elbowing you again! Would I see this movie again? Yes, I can't wait for the next release.

There are millions of book readers in the world, but I'm afraid that I am not one of them. And for every one of those bookworms there are probably ten people like me who know that if you wait long enough, all the classic novels will eventually be turned into movies. Case in point: "Lord of the Rings." I hate to say it, but before this movie I honestly don't think I had ever even heard of J.R.R. Tolkiens, let alone read one his books. Stick me with a fork and call me "uncultured," but movies are the only way I'm ever going to know stories like this.
The movie itself was long but extremely good, with the story out-doing any special effects. The story was easy to follow even though there were a lot of characters to keep track of. Speaking of characters, Liv Tyler's part was entirely too small. Finally, this flick offers some of the coolest bad guys I've ever seen.
Is "Lord of the Rings" worth the price of admission? Yes, you will definitely get your money's worth with this movie. Would I see it again? I might on DVD, but not in the theater. It's too long.
