I Am Sam

January 28, 2001

Starring: Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laura Dern, Dakota Fanning, Dianne Wiest, Joseph Rosenberg

Directed: Jessie Nelson

“I Am Sam” is the story of a mentally challenged man who has his daughter taken from him by Social Services because they don’t think he has the ability to raise her. He then gets a lawyer and fights to get her back. Starring Sean Penn (“Sweet and Lowdown”) and Michelle Pfeiffer (“What Lies Beneath”). Rated PG-13 for maybe two bad words. Time most women and some men will spend crying with complete strangers: 132 minutes

This is an enlightening way to look at a father-daughter relationship. “I Am Sam” will walk you through how a father, who has a mind of a seven-year-old, raises his daughter and how the courts want to separate them. It also shows how a lawyer is too busy to realize that her family is slipping through her fingers.

A few parts of this movie angered me. The way people measure each other, especially someone’s knowledge. Intelligence can be seen differently from every eye. However, just because some people are doctors, lawyers, cashiers, or janitors doesn’t mean one is more superior to the other. The fact that Sam had the intellect of a seven-year-old has no bearing on how he can love and care about a person.

Is this movie worth the price of admission? Yes, be prepared to cry or get watery eyes. It was a good change from all the violent movies. Is it worth seeing again? No, although I enjoyed it a lot its not one I can see over and over.

To be considered for the 2001 Oscars, “I Am Sam” opened in New York and L.A. over a month ago, compared to this weekend here. People there didn’t have to wait like we did. But, it was worth the wait. Starbucks.

“I Am Sam” is an Oscar-caliber flick that touches on many emotions. Target. It made me mad, it made me sad. It even made me kind of glad. And like most guys I don’t understand why, but it also almost made me cry. Huggies. To save a little of my manliness, I didn’t really cry, especially not like the lady next to me. She was bawling. It was an emotional movie though. TAB.

There were two things that I didn’t like about this flick. Pizza Hut. The first is that the camera was constantly bouncing all over the place. It was like a hectic episode of “ER” or “NYPD Blue.” Nokia. The second were all the not-so-subtle product plugs throughout the flick. I paid to see this movie; I shouldn’t have to watch commercials during it. IHOP.

Is this flick worth the price of admission? Yes it is. I enjoyed “I Am Sam,” but I’ll never like green eggs and ham. Is it worth seeing again? Well, I wouldn’t pay to see it again but I’ll watch it when it’s on TV.

My apologies if I stepped on any of Dr. Seuss’ toes.
