Black Hawk Down

January 22, 2002

Starring: Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, Eric Bana, William Fichtner, Ewen Bremner, Sam Shepard

Directed: Ridley Scott

“Black Hawk Down” is based on actual events that took place in Somalia in 1993. U.S. forces planned to enter the hostile city of Mogadishu and capture top lieutenants of warlord Mohamed Aidid and get out in a short period of time. Events start to unravel and the short mission turns into all-out battle for life. Starring Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor), Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge!), and Tom Sizemore (“Pearl Harbor”). Directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator). Rated ‘R’ for war violence and language. Time spent watching a war in the theater instead of on the news: 150 minutes.

This is a disturbing movie describing our intentions in trying to help a country, and how it can end up back firing on us. The reason I found this movie disturbing is that the title should’ve been called "ER" I almost threw up in a couple of scenes due to all the graphic scenes. This is not a movie to take your whole family to.

With any movie depicting a time in history I wonder how much of it is really true. What is actual reality and what did “Hollywood” try to change to win an Oscar? For some reason, I believe that this movie might be more accurate than most because although we always want to believe we know what we are doing and that we are untouchable, we never expect that our plan can have some unforeseen situations that will limit our power. This movie showed the possible vulnerability of our country’s armed forces, and proved that we should never underestimate the powers of others.

Is this movie worth the price of admission? Yes, it cleared up why we even went to help them out. I wasn’t aware they lost over 300,000 lives due to lack of food. I also had to see what all the hype was about. Is it worth seeing again? No, once was enough for me.

People love war movies. Why is that? Is it the combination of action and drama? Some people like the blood and gore. Personally, I like war movies because they offer a glimpse of the triumphs and the horrors of war from the soldier’s point of view. Seeing their sacrifices makes me appreciate my freedoms.

I never really understood what happened to our forces that day in Somalia. Seeing “Black Hawk Down” was like a history lesson that helped me understand just what happened. I was shocked by the amount of bloodshed. I knew that we lost 18 men but I never knew that nearly 1000 Somalis died.

“Black Hawk Down” has all the awesome war scenes with plenty of blood and guts. It was a very good movie that will at least be nominated for some Oscars. However, it didn’t have the same effect on me as other war movies such as Saving Private Ryan. After great war movies, I leave the theater with a sinking feeling in my stomach and a lump in my throat. I didn’t get that feeling here. Maybe I’m just a little more used to war now.

Is “Black Hawk Down” worth the price of admission? Yes. Everyone old enough should see it. Is it worth seeing again? Probably not, I’ll just watch the History Channel to fill in any holes.
