Austin Powers - Goldmember
July 25, 2002
Starring: Mike Myers, Michael Caine, Beyonce Knowles, Robert Wagner
Directed by: Jay Roach
The third installment of the Austin Powers story features many of the same characters doing their normal things. In "Goldmember," Dr. Evil again tries to destroy the world, this time with a tractor beam and an asteroid, while Austin Powers tries to stop him. New characters include Goldmember himself and Foxxy Cleopatra. Starring Mike Myers, Beyoncé Knowles, and Michael Caine. Rated PG-13 for crude humor and many not-so-subtle sexual innuendos. Time spent looking deep inside the crazy mind of Mike Myers: 94 minutes.

This flick was funny and obnoxious, and, oh, did I mention funny? All through "Goldmember" I kept wondering what can possibly happen next and what kind of person comes up with this stuff? The answer is Mike Myers.
There's no one word that can describe Mike Myers. He is so creative and off the wall that it blows my mind. He has basically made a living of being Austin Powers but more power to him if it's a huge success.
Beyoncé Knowles makes her acting debuting in this movie. She gained fame as part of the music group "Destiny's Child." Although she seemed rough on the edges, with practice she will be a huge hit in the future. Many big actors also have small parts and they were quite humorous.
"Goldmember" wasn't as disgusting as the past releases but the sexual innuendos were still there.
Is this movie worth the price of admission? Yes, but it's not appropriate for children, even though the theater was packed with them. I did enjoy this movie but I have to admit that I was floating on cloud nine all weekend because I got engaged and no matter what I did it seemed a little better than normal. Would I see it again? Probably if I want to have an "Austin Powers" movie night.

Like most sequels, "Goldmember" picked up the storyline right where the previous flick left off. The jokes, on the other hand, felt more like somebody pushed the rewind button and played the same old jokes as before. All the jokes felt the same and some were the same, on purpose. They tried to make new jokes out of old ones by making fun of the fact that they were used before, but that was really just a clever way of covering for a lack of new material. I also heard some talk of a fourth "Austin Powers" because this one has done so well. I wonder if that one would have any original material at all.
Now even though some stuff felt like a bad summer rerun, this flick was still pretty funny. Most of the funnier characters make return appearances and the celebrity cameos are hilarious. My favorite character was Foxxy Cleopatra. Her acting was fittingly cheesy and she didn't really do much but she was very easy on the eyes.
Is the latest sequel of "Austin Powers" worth the price of admission? I was generally disappointed but for die-hard fans this is just a movie that you have to see. Would I see it again? No thanks; I'd rather watch one of the first two.
