Collateral Damage

Directed: Andrew Davis

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a Los Angeles fireman whose family is killed by a terrorist bomb. He travels to Columbia to find and destroy the man responsible and gets more than he bargained for. Also starring Elias Koteas (“Lost Souls”), Cliff Curtis (“Blow”), and Francesca Neri (“Hannibal”). Rated R for language and all types of violence. Time away from the still largely tape-delayed Olympics even though they are in our own time zone: 115 minutes.

This is an intense action packed movie that will take you through the events of a grieving father and husband’s determination to bring justice to the murderer of his family.
“Collateral Damage” seemed to hit home. This movie was supposed to come out last October, but with the contents and the events that happened on 9/11/01 a few scenes needed to be changed and some even deleted. I think that this may have been released too soon for some, but it may help people understand why terrorists attack. It doesn’t justify any attacks, but there are always two sides to every story.
I can’t believe how buff Arnold still looks. He seems better than ever. I can promise I wouldn’t want to fight against him for any reason. His acting isn’t top notch, but this movie really just needed his physical aspects.
Is “Collateral Damage” worth the price of admission? Yes, even though the contents were disturbing at times it seemed like any other Schwarzenegger movie with violence, blood, and a couple of twists. The bottom line is that this movie provides plenty of action. Is it worth seeing again? Maybe when it comes out on DVD so I can see any special features or any deleted scenes.

If I didn’t know better, I’d say this movie was thought up and rushed to production after the events of September 11th. It felt like it was “ripped the headlines” like many TV shows claim to be. It depicts the head of an anti-American terrorist group using bombs on U.S. soil to protest American policy. Sound familiar? Actually though, this flick was made well before September and just turned out to be an eerie glimpse of the not-so-distant future.
Unfortunately, “Collateral Damage” felt familiar in another way too. It had pretty much the same feel as every other Schwarzenegger flick ever made. Arnold enjoys the convenience of being shot at wildly but never hit, having the weapons he needs fall into his lap, and the ability to stroll into Columbia and effortlessly find a terrorist the CIA has been looking for years. Wow. If Arnold is that good, we should send him into Afghanistan to get bin Laden. Who needs the military when you have the Terminator?
Anyway, this is a pretty average flick. If you’re an Arnold fan, you’ll dig it. If you’re not, your shovel won’t get much use.
Is “Collateral Damage” worth the price of admission? For me barely, but for Arnold fans it’ll probably be worth every penny. Is it worth seeing again? Nope.
